Chrome Shifter Surround - TL VRX

I am continually being "flashed" by the sun reflecting on the chrome plated surround for the Auto Shifter in my TL VRX. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions for replacing it or covering it?

I usually put a towel around the shifter to stop it giving me the sh...ts.

Don't seem to have that problem myself, though i think a few members on here have switched it with a standard black issue one from a VR and down. Best bet is mitsu spares.

I had the same problem, I swapped to a black surround. It cost about $110 from Mitsubishi. The surround is retained by four moulded in plastic clips. If you are careful (and have three hands) it can be removed after taking the console cover off first. The replacement just pushes on from the top. Brief instruction (as I remember) below:

1) Use phillips head screw driver to loosen grub screw on shift knob, lift know up to remove. Place loose cap over shift lever to prevent getting poked in the eye or breaking thin rod protruding from shift lever.

2) Remove the centre console cover by lifting at the rear, near the arm rest. Disconnect the electric window controls by pushing the "button" on the connector and pulling on the connector. Put console cover to the side.

3) Look for the surround clips. Work them off carefully, a bit at a time, trying to keep the surround as level as possible to reduce the risk of breaking off the clips. A screw driver used as a lever and fingers can be using to pry the clips out and off from the pins they fit over.

4) Disconnect the light from the bottom of the surround (you may be able to do this as step 3).

5) Fit the replacement surround, pushing it down, keeping it as level as possible, until all four clips are in. Refit what you removed.

6) Enjoy not being dazzled.

You could try some night shades on it. Maybe try a similar material first or mask up the corner that is under the console.

I am going to check out a manual boot first. If this is no go, I will look at the std black one or maybe get a carbon fibre one...

A manual boot!?!? is that possible in an auto? If it is then I might do the same. I got a VRX and it has the chrome surround, the only problem is that mine has started to bubble a little, and looks a little dodgy. I don't mind the chrome though, but if an auto can have a manual surrond that would be tops. However if you want to sell your chrome surround I'll buy it off ya cause I can't find one at any wreckers anywhere. Went to Eddy Wreckers here in Adelaide and they said that they are very rare and I wouldn't have alot of luck trying to find on.
